The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has faced a major administrative upheaval just as the LPL 2026 season gets underway. Sports Commune, the ownership group of the Jaffna Kings, has been officially stripped of its franchise rights by the tournament's rights holder, Innovative Production Group (IPG), and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). This drastic measure follows a complete breakdown in the franchise's financial structure and the recent arrest of one of its co-owners.
According to a report, the termination was triggered by Sports Commune's inability to fulfill its financial commitments. The situation escalated rapidly following the arrest of Manjot Kalra, a co-owner of the Jaffna Kings, by Sri Lankan authorities on corruption charges. Kalra is currently in judicial custody until July 31st.
Financial Mismanagement Leads to Drastic Action
The core issue stems from a structural failure within the franchise's commercial operations. Under the existing agreement, sponsors were supposed to direct payments to the owners, who were then responsible for distributing salaries to the players and staff. However, following Kalra's arrest, this payment pipeline completely collapsed.
The situation became glaringly public during a match on July
22nd. Due to the failure of Sports Commune to disperse sponsorship funds,
players were forced to take the field with black tape covering the sponsor
logos on their jerseys, highlighting the severity of the financial crisis
within the Jaffna Kings camp.
The termination follows the franchisee's inability to fulfil its financial obligations under the terms of the franchise agreement.
Adding to the chaos, reports indicate that the other co-owner, Mayank Goel, has become unreachable after recently arriving in Sri Lanka. This lack of communication further solidified the need for immediate intervention by the tournament organizers to protect the integrity of the LPL.
IPG and SLC Take Full Operational Control
To prevent the Jaffna Kings from collapsing entirely and to ensure the smooth continuation of LPL 2026, IPG and SLC have taken unprecedented steps. They have assumed full operational control of the team, effectively taking over all contracts for players, coaching staff, and support personnel.
This swift intervention has already begun to stabilize the situation. According to statements from IPG, emergency funds have been deployed to clear approximately 90% of the outstanding player and staff salaries. Furthermore, IPG has committed to settling all remaining balances within the originally agreed-upon contractual timelines, providing much-needed relief to the affected individuals.

edition of the LPL under the same name. There will be no alterations to their
playing squad, the overall tournament format, or the scheduled fixtures. This
ensures that the focus can now shift back to the cricket itself, despite the
